Two New Book Reviews Published

on Thu, 04/25/2013 - 00:32

Just an update on two new book reviews done by yours truly. The first has been published by the Michigan War Studies Review. In February I was asked to join their stable of reviewers and I wholeheartedly agreed. For those of you who haven't had a chance to take a look at the work done by the Michigan War Studies Review I can't recommend it enough. The Michigan War Studies Review (MiWSR, formerly MWSR) is an online scholarly journal affiliated with the Michigan War Studies Group and edited by James P. Holoka. Items are published on a rolling basis and gathered in annual volumes.

New Book Review

We have a brand new book review. Jonathan Beard has reviewed Paul Kennedy's Engineers of Victory: The Problem Solvers Who Turned the Tide in the Second World War.  Mr. Beard is a freelance journalist, researcher and translator living in New York City.  He has worked for several science magazines, including New Scientist and Science Illustrated, and translated for various publications, including the late World Press Review.  He has written hundreds of book reviews for many publications. His military history reviews are online at the Michigan War Studies Review:

On October 1, 2012 The Michigan War Studies Review published its review of Why Germany Nearly Won: A New History of the Second World War in Europe. The review provided below is as it appears on the Michigan War Studies Review website:

Steven D. Mercatante, Why Germany Nearly Won: A New History of the Second World War in Europe. Santa Barbara, CA: Praeger, 2012. Pp. xviii, 408. ISBN 978–0–313–39592–5.

Review by Ralph M. Hitchens, Poolesville, MD (rmhitchens@netscape.net).

This book does not quite live up to its title, but it is worth reading nevertheless.

World War II Magazine (a publication of the Weider History Group - the world's largest publisher of history magazines) in its November/December 2012 issue is publishing it's review of Why Germany Nearly Won: A New History of the Second World War in Europe. Reviewer Conrad Crane finds that Why Germany Nearly Won is a "thought provoking book" whose "case deserves to be heard".  The review provided below is as published (text only: minus two accompanying pictures and book title/publisher/pricing information):

This book’s title doesn’t adequately describe the ambitions of the author. Steven D.
